The USCG GMDSS (General Operators Certificate) course includes both theoretical and practical work with extensive range of GMDSS equipment.

The GMDSS course syllabus includes:
* Knowledge and practice of radio procedures for distress, urgency and safety.
* Knowledge and practice of general radio regulations, including commercial traffic handling.
* Basic maintenance: Location and replacement of fuses and use of built-in test facilities.

Operation of a full range of GMDSS equipment – VHF and MF/HF transceivers with digital selective calling, MF/HF telex, Inmarsat Standard A and C satellite communications, Navtex receivers, search and rescue radar transponders (SARTs) and emergency position indicating radio beacons (EPIRBs).
