The qualifying yacht service specified for any particular deck officer (yacht) certificate of competency or licence must be performed in the deck department. It is calculated from the date of engagement to the date of discharge. At least 6 months of the qualifying yacht service must have been performed within the 5 years preceding the application. During the qualifying yacht service there is a requirement to complete a specified periods of service.
Service definitions
Onboard Yacht Service is the time spent signed on a yacht irrespective of the vessel activity
Actual Sea Service is time spent at sea which may include time at anchor or river and canal transits associated with a passage
Stand-by Service is time moored whilst fully crewed, victualled, fuelled and stored ready to proceed safely to sea, e.g. awaiting the owner to arrive or a Charter to commence
Yard Service is time when standing by a build, refit or repair
Sea Service includes a combination of Actual Sea Service, Stand-by Service and/ or Yard Service Watchkeeping Service is Actual Sea Service spent as a Watchkeeping Officer in full charge of a navigational watch for not less than eight out of every 24 hours whilst the vessel is engaged on voyage
Documentary proof of yacht service must be in 2 different formats. Such proof should be in the form of any one of the following:
Merchant Navy Discharge Book; or
Certificates of Discharge; or
Professional Yachtsmen’s Service Record Book; or
International Yacht Training Personal Seatime Log Book;
Or similar MCA approved service record book.
AND supported by signed testimonials from owners, masters, chief engineers or management companies.
Testimonials should cover conduct and ability for at least the last 12 months of Onboard Yacht Service preceding the date of application and may also include details of Sea Service and Watchkeeping Service as applicable.
Testimonials or certificates of service should be signed by the Master of the vessel in which the qualifying service has been performed. In the case of service as Master the testimonials or certificates of service must be signed by the owner or a responsible person from the Yacht Management Company such as a company director or yacht manager.
Officer of the Watch (OOW) Service requirements:
36 months Onboard Yacht Service, in vessels of any size, including not less than 365 days Sea Service in vessels of 15 metres or over in loadline length, where the Sea Service is:
A minimum of 250 days Actual Sea Service, and
The balance of 115 days any combination of the following:
• Further Actual Sea Service
• Stand-by Service to a maximum of 14 consecutive days in one period regardless of any further time spent standing-by. Further periods may be counted only when the vessel returns after proceeding to sea on passage
• Yard Service to a maximum of 90 days continuously or in separate periods
Chief Mate requires no additional service time
Master <500 gt Service requirements:
A minimum of 12 months Onboard Yacht Service as a Deck Officer, including not less than 120 days Watchkeeping Service, in vessels of 15 metres or over in loadline length whilst holding an accepted OOW STCW Reg. II/1 (Yachts less than 3000gt) CoC
Master <3000 gt Service requirements:
Have a minimum of 24 months Onboard Yacht Service as a Deck Officer, including not less than 240 days Watchkeeping Service whilst holding an accepted OOW STCW Reg. II/1 (Yachts less than 3000gt) CoC. All of this service must be completed in vessels of 15 metres or over in loadline length and include 12 months in vessels of 24 metres or over in load line length, or six months in vessels of 500gt or more
Engineering Time – must be completed on a vessel of 24 meters or greater
The qualifying yacht service specified for any particular engineer officer (yacht) certificate of competency or licence must be performed in the engineering department. It is calculated from the date of engagement to the date of discharge. At least 6 months of the qualifying yacht service must have been performed within the 5 years preceding the application. During the qualifying yacht service there is a requirement to complete a specified period of “actual” sea service. This “actual” sea service may be accumulated on a day by day basis. (A day at sea is any day when the vessel leaves port or is already at sea.)
Documentary proof of yacht service must be in 2 different formats. Such proof should be in the form of any one of the following:
Merchant Navy Discharge Book; or
Certificates of Discharge; or
Professional Yachtsmen’s Service Record Book; or
International Yacht Training Personal Seatime Log Book;
Or similar MCA approved service record book.
AND supported by signed testimonials from owners, masters, chief engineers or management companies
Time requirements:
AEC - not less than 1 month’s service as a yacht engineer
MEOL - 36 months service as a dual purpose deck/engineer officer responsible for the maintenance and servicing of the vessel, whilst holding an AEC certificate; or
24 months service as a yacht engineer responsible for system maintenance whilst holding an AEC certificate; or
an MN MEOL basic engineering craft skills training or MCA-approved formal engineering craft training plus 18 months service as a yacht engineer responsible for system maintenance and repair;
Y4 - 42 months service as a yacht engineer which must include at least 6 months accumulated actual sea service; or
an MN MEOL basic engineering craft skills training or MCA approved formal engineering craft training plus 36 months service as a yacht engineer which must include at least 6 months accumulated actual sea service; or
a UK engineering craft apprenticeship acceptable to the MCA plus12 months service as a yacht engineer which must include at least 6 months accumulated actual sea service; or
12 months service as a yacht engineer which must include at least 6 months accumulated actual sea service; whilst holding a MEOL(Y); or
12 months service as a yacht engineer whilst holding a MEOL( MN); or
6 months service as a yacht engineer whilst holding a MN Senior Marine Engine Operator licence;
Y3 - 9 months service as a yacht engineer which must include at least 3 months accumulated actual sea service whilst holding a Chief Engineer certificate of competency (Yacht 4)
Y2 - 24 months service as a yacht engineer which must include at least 12 months accumulated actual sea service whilst holding a Chief Engineer certificate of competency (Yacht 4); or
15 months service as a yacht engineer which must include at least 9 months accumulated actual sea service whilst holding a Chief Engineer certificate of competency (Yacht 3) (Chief Engineer “Service Endorsement”); or
9 months service as a yacht engineer which must include at least 3 months accumulated actual sea service whilst holding a UK Merchant Navy STCW 95 Engineer Officer of the Watch, Reg III/1 certificate of competency or UK
recognized equivalent; or
6 months service as a yacht engineer whilst holding a UK Merchant Navy STCW 95 Second Engineer, Reg III/3 (less than 3,000 kW) certificate of competency or UK recognized equivalent;
Y1 - 12 months service as a yacht engineer on a motor yacht of between 500 to 3,000 gt and not less than 3,000 kW propulsion power, whilst in possession of the Chief Engineer certificate of competency (Yacht 2); or
12 months service as a yacht engineer on a sailing yacht of between 1,000 to 3,000 gt and not less than 1,500 kW propulsion power, whilst in possession of the Chief Engineer certificate of competency (Yacht 2); or
6 months service as yacht engineer on a yacht of between 500 to 3,000 gt and not less than 3,000 kW propulsion power, whilst in possession of a UK Merchant Navy STCW 95 Second Engineer, Reg III/2 (unlimited) certificate of competency
